Migration: Let us explore its conceptual side

Migration is a historic phenomenon which happens now and will happen tomorrow. It ensures, of course, overall development of the economy and also a serious problem associated with the social, economic and political life. Migration is the movement of people from one place to another which creates demographic redistribution of population. Migration is either internal or external. Internal migration denotes the movement of people from one place to another within the country, where as the external migration refers to the movement of people beyond the territory of a nation.

Researchers identified the reason behind the push and pull factors of the migration.

Push factors are the factors which compel people to leave the native place and this happened largely due to the poor economic condition and lack of availability of better employment. Pull factors are the factors which encourage migration to an area exercised by better economic opportunities, facilities and employment.

India has absolute differences and disparity in economic and demographic and structural basis. These issues can be solved largely through internal migration. Movement of people from a abundant sector to scarce sector facilitates development, which helps in the growth of a nation. According to Ram Bhagat, 'No country has developed without migration and as India developing and growing, internal migration is inevitable factor and with migration there will be urbanization and development '.

Internal migration can be encouraged to redistribute population for seeking employment which influence the socio economic and political life of sending and receiving region.

Census and surveys exhibit that there is a tremendous increase in the flow of in-migrants across the region. As far as internal migration was concerned, in India, marriage is the key reason for the movement of women and it is characterized largely a short distance but the long distance movement are largely in male, which is characterised by labour migration to seek employment and earn higher income. On the basis of this moment it is permanent, semi permanent or seasonal. Permanent and semi permanent are those staying for long- short period of time but seasonal migrants are continuously changes their place of residence.

In nutshell, migration helps to balance disparities of economic, social as well as regional and also stimulates exchange of culture and customs.

  1. Painful is when one is forced to move out of one's own birth place. Feeling of alienation in one's own place is even horrible. But if some movement brings forth positive change, cheers to migration!
