The Implicit Power Structures of the Academy

Academic institutions, which are characterized as field of egalitarianism and place of intellectual discovery, can be a place of systemic discrimination  which has great impact on faculty experiences. For example, some forms of power can emerge in senior and junior faculty hierarchical power relations.

It masks the reality that at best we function with a two-tiered system where seniority dictates respect and influence. Ironically, and this is where it goes more to the meat of the American stock market battle, if many senior faculty who espouse progressive values in their classrooms can unwittingly sustain this hierarchical structure in their own interactions with junior faculty.

The effects of this discrimination go beyond professional unease. This can come in the form of unnecessary scapegoating of junior faculty, and sometimes even their families. Such a baseless behavior creates a hostile work environment and shakes the safety combat this, communication among faculty is key. We take the barriers down that get in the way of working together. In order to guarantee that all faculty members, regardless of their seniority, are treated fairly and equally, the introduction of a well-detailed anti-discrimination policy is also recommended.

These shared experiences aim to catalyse a conversation about the less easily perceived and the mutual respect necessary for academic growth.

So, to combat this, communication among faculty is key. We take the barriers down that get in the way of working together. In order to guarantee that all faculty members, regardless of their seniority, are treated fairly and equally, the introduction of a well-detailed anti-discrimination policy is also recommended.

Creating a fairer academic environment is crucial for fostering a sense of community and promoting inclusivity. However, many junior faculty members face discrimination, bias, and unequal treatment, leading to feelings of isolation, anxiety, and burnout. To change this, we need to break down the barriers that exist within our institutions by creating clear and fair promotion and tenure processes, providing regular training and workshops on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and fostering an environment of open communication and collaboration. Additionally, individual actions such as practicing self-reflection and awareness, active listening, and constructive feedback can also help build stronger relationships and a sense of community. Ultimately, creating a fairer academic environment requires effort and commitment from all of us, and by working together, we can break down barriers, build stronger relationships, and create a more inclusive and supportive community.
