EcoKaari: Sustainable and Ethical Products for a Better World

EcoKaari is a social enterprise founded by Nandan Bhat, a production engineer with an MBA in Marketing, who is passionate about nature and the environment. His desire to do something meaningful and worthwhile by upcycling plastic waste and providing a better livelihood opportunity to the artisans from humble backgrounds gave birth to EcoKaari. It is based in Pune, India, and aims to promote sustainable living while providing a platform for women and youth to showcase their artistic talent.

EcoKaari's primary objective is to upcycle plastic waste into beautiful handcrafted fabric using charkhas and handlooms, which are traditional weaving machines. The fabric is then used to design daily utility items such as handbags, fashion accessories, home décor, and office stationery products. By reusing, recycling, and upcycling plastic waste, EcoKaari aims to reduce the environmental impact of plastic pollution and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The company works with waste pickers, packaging industries, and conscious customers who donate their plastic waste. However, the raw material selection process is critical to ensure that only suitable plastic waste is used. Sachets or straws that are small, packets that are cut at the corners or ripped open, and hard plastics like tetra packs, CDs, or PET bottles cannot be used as they are difficult to weave. The plastic waste is washed using minimal water and natural detergents and then hung out to dry in the sun. The waste is then cut by hand and rolled on a traditional charkha, and finally woven into fabric on the handlooms. The team of designers and master tailors transforms the fabric into a variety of beautiful and colorful utility products.

EcoKaari's products are eco-friendly, sustainable, and beautiful. They include tote bags, backpacks, clutches, laptop sleeves, pencil pouches, and home decor items like coasters and table runners. Each product is unique and has a story to tell, as it is handcrafted by artisans who are skilled in bag making, tailoring, and related crafts. The products are sold online and in various stores across India.

Moreover, it is a company that is dedicated to creating sustainable and ethical products that are both high-quality and affordable. By using recycled and sustainable materials, and working with local artisans, the company is making a positive impact on the environment and supporting local communities. With a wide range of products to choose from, EcoKaari is a great choice for anyone looking for sustainable and ethical alternatives to traditional products. Overall, EcoKaari is an inspiring example of how businesses can be both profitable and environmentally conscious. By upcycling plastic waste and providing a livelihood to artisans, the company is making a positive impact on society and the environment.
