A Quick Guide to Simplified Financial Record-Keeping

 

The single-entry system is a way of keeping track of finances that is not subject to the strict rules of the double-entry system. In simple words, we can say that this is an accounting system that does not follow the principles of double entry. In this system, only the basic elements of accounting, such as cash and personal accounts, are maintained. It fails to apply the double entry principle. The alternatives to the single entry are "Incomplete" and "Incomplete records."

According to Kohler, "A single entry system is a system of bookkeeping in which, as a rule, only records of cash and personal accounts are maintained. It is always an incomplete double entry, varying with circumstances".

The main highlighted features are

·        It's not even possible to compare with double entries.

·        It is incomplete, unscientific, and more convenience-based.

·        It may not give a complete view of a transaction.

Even though the single-entry system doesn’t follow the double entry principles, it has some benefits, like. Simple to handle in that it requires only a minimal accounting language, making it easier and more convenient to handle. Compared to a double entry system, it is easier to implement and maintain the accounting system. This system is more suitable for small businesses, where transactions are relatively low and not complicated. Here, we record transactions at once, which may save more time, and the flexibility provided by the system is more clearly highlighted.

In order to prepare final accounts, we have to find out missing figures, that is, single entry system is an incomplete and this is done by preparing various ledgers.



 Overall, the single-entry system is a basic and easy-to-use method for maintaining financial records, but it is limited in its ability to provide a comprehensive view of a company's financial position and performance.
