  Maternal Health: Alarming Trends and Emerging Insights Maternal health continues to be a major public health concern, and recent data highlight worrying patterns. In the last ten years, the highest number of maternal deaths occurred in 2021–22, with 220 deaths. The new reports from April to June 2024–25 show 27 maternal deaths, indicating that risks remain. Palakkad reported the highest number of deaths  and nearly half of all deaths came from Palakkad, Thrissur and Kozhikode. Among the 27 deaths this year, one involved a migrant worker from KGD, and one maternal suicide was reported—much lower than the 13 suicides reported last year. A closer look reveals that 33% of deaths occurred during pregnancy, 4% on the day of delivery, and 63% in the postpartum period. Many deaths happened in health facilities, with 48% in private hospitals, 26% in public, and 7% each at home or in transit.   An eye-opening visit to Salva Care – A home for the homeless ones As humans, we always love to explore new places. I’m also that kind of person who loves to travel to different places. Spending a lot of time in new places always give a soothing experience for the soul. But sometimes life intentionally offers some new experiences for us in order to teach some lessons and make us realise how blessed we are. Recently, I got an opportunity to visit Salva Care, an old-age home, as part of the Unnat Bharat Abhiyan initiative. UBA provides opportunities for young people to contribute to the development of rural areas. For this, we made visits to various villages in order to find the gaps that existed there. As part of   it, we visited the Vettikkattiri village office and met Shyam Sir, the village officer.   പൈപ്പിന് ചുവട്ടിലെ പാഠം! മൂന്നു പാതകൾ ചേരുന്ന ഒരു നാട്ടുമുക്ക്. പാത എന്നു പറയുമ്പോൾ ഇന്നത്തെതു പോലെ ടാറിട്ട റബറൈസ്ടും ലെവലൈസ്ടും ഒന്നുമല്ല. നല്ല മൺ റോഡ്. ഒരു ഇരുചക്ര വാഹനം പോയാൽ തന്നെ പുറകിൽ പുകമറ പൊങ്ങി വീടുവരെ കൊണ്ടുവിടുന്ന തരത്തിലുള്ള പൂഴിമണ്ണ് ഉയരുന്ന പാത. ആ റോഡിന് ചാരെയായി ഉണ്ട് ഒരു പഞ്ചായത്ത് പൈപ്പ്. മൂന്നും കൂടിയ ആ മൂലയും ആ ടാപ്പു ആയിരുന്നു വീടിനുള്ള അടയാളം.  ചുവര് ചുരണ്ടിയാൽ മേൽക്കൂരയുടെ മേളിൽ സ്ഥാനം പിടിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന ടാങ്കുകളിൽ വെള്ളം നിറയുന്ന കാലം വരുന്നതിനേക്കാൾ മുൻപ് പഞ്ചായത്ത് പൈപ്പുകൾ ആയിരുന്നു വീടുകളിലേക്ക് വെള്ളം എത്തിക്കുക. സ്ത്രീകളുടെ ഒക്കത്തും തലയിലും ആടി ഉലഞ്ഞു തുളുമ്പുന്ന കുടങ്ങളിലും പാത്രങ്ങളിലും ആയി വെള്ളം മാത്രമല്ല  പോവുക മറിച്ച് വീടുകളിലെ ജനനം മരണം വിവാഹം അങ്ങനെ പോകുന്ന നാട്ടുവർത്തമാനങ്ങൾ സ്ത്രീകളുടെ കൂടെ അന്യ വീടുകളിലേക്ക് സഞ്ചരിച്ചു.   ഈ പഞ്ചായത്ത് പൈപ്പിന്റെ അടുത്തുള്ള വീട്ടിലായിരുന്നു ഞങ്ങൾ താമസിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ജല അതോറിറ്റി ടാപ്പുകളിലേക്ക് വെള്ളം വിതരണം ചെയ്യുക രാത്രി പത്തരയ്ക്ക് ശേഷം ആയിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ആ നാട്ടിൽ ഗൂർക്കയുടെ ആവശ...
