The Fellowship of 'The Ring' by J.R.R. Tolkien

Back in 1954, J.R.R. Tolkien had a fantasy book with over 1,000 pages in a reading environment that people didn’t think was ready for such a vast nerdy world. However, the book quickly became a huge success, gaining traction for its incredible world-building, wonderful imagination and incredible sense of depth and immersion that J.R.R. Tolkien has embedded into it. Nearly 70 years on from this date, The Lord of the Rings is considered the grandfather of fantasy. He has influenced almost every single form of fantasy media there is and is widely considered not just one of the greatest fantasy novels of all time but also possibly one of the greatest novels in any genre.

The journey in The Lord of the Rings begins with The Fellowship of the Ring, introducing us to The Hobbits, Frodo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, and other companions who will join Frodo on his quest. Without revealing too much, Frodo is tasked with taking the one ring to Mordor and destroying it, as it holds immense power that evil forces seek to exploit. This premise has been echoed in many storylines since. As Frodo and his companions embark on their epic journey, they encounter dangers, new cultures, incredible worlds, and fascinating people.

The general plot of The Lord of the Rings series is widely recognized in pop culture. However, this first book particularly focuses on introducing new cultures and races. Hobbits, who typically never leave The Shire, find contentment in their own world and seldom see the need to venture beyond their little hamlet. As Frodo and his companions depart from The Shire, they encounter things they had only heard of in legends.

Tolkien's remarkable imagination is evident in the plot of this first novel. His ability to create fully-realized worlds, invent poems, languages, and believable alternative cultures is what sets this book apart and solidifies its place in literature alongside some of the most imaginative minds in the genre.
